IMPACT encrypted enclosures utilize the Enova X-WALL® security ASIC, which is a physical chip that intercepts, interprets, translates, and relays IDE commands and data securing the entire hard drive including boot sector, temp files, swap files and the operating system, using the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) certified DES (Data Encryption Standard) 40-bit key strength. The hard drive used in the IMPACT enclosure must be partitioned and formatted with the Secure Token prior to first use. When complete, the entire hard drive is associated with that unique Secure Token. Thereafter, only a Secure Token containing the identical "secret key" can authenticate a user at power up.

At startup, the secret key is transmitted to and held in protected volatile memory inside the X-WALL® microchip. This means the secret key cannot be extracted from the chip, and is never stored anywhere else on the machine. Without the secret key stored in the Secure Token, a protected disk drive cannot be booted or subsequently accessed. The IMPACT Secure Token, which has the same form factor as a FireWire 400 connector, is provided with a discreet error-proof module to prevent accidental insertion into a FireWire port. The IMPACT Secure Token can only be accepted by the appropriate Secure Token port preventing potential damage to the FireWire 400 port due to accidental insertion of the Secure Token.
